INCENTIVE SPIROMETER BENEFITS. An Incentive Spirometer which is otherwise known as a respirometer is an instrument that is used as a way of breathing exercises to help with healing after surgery, and prevent certain complications that might follow surgery, especially conditions like atelectasis and pneumonia.  It is also used in managing certain illnesses such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease(COPD), Pneumonia, Asthma, Chronic bronchitis, Spinal Cord Injury patients, Bronchiectasis, Emphysema, Rib damage, etc.

Respirometer is made of plastic which is hollow and clear. A typical respirometer is made up of a mouthpiece, a tube, and a chamber with an indicator.

The indicator gives the patient feedback and in a way, patient is enabled to visualize his/her achievement. This also serves as a form of motivation for the patient.

Benefits of USING Incentive Spirometer

How It works

To use the Incentive Spirometer, observe the following;

  1. Sit upright either in a chair or while in bed
  2. Exhale completely and put the mouthpiece in the mouth then close the lips tightly around it
  3. Breathe in slowly through the mouth (not the nose)
  4. Notice the movement of the indicator and try to get the piston (or balls) as high as possible or to a marked level, then hold the breath. While holding, let the piston (or balls) fall to the base of the Incentive spirometer.

  8. This procedure can be done hourly when awake.
  9. Health Benefits of Incentive Spirometer.

Incentive Spirometer helps to generate a sustained slow deep breath by taking the patient through a sustained, maximal inspiration. Incentive Spirometry thus aid exercise of the lungs so that it can allow more air into it.This helps to increase the lung capacity and improves the patient’s ability to breathe.It has been found out that deep breathing through the use of an Incentive spirometer helps to open airways, this allows for ease in breathing.

Also, deep breathing is useful in prevention of accumulation of fluids and mucus in the lungs and likewise aids breathing ease.Incentive spirometry trains the muscle used for respiration (Inspiratory muscles) thus increasing their performance which culminates into improving the lung function.
